Industrial Fireproofing for Petrochem & Fuel Storage — Sasol, Engen, Natref, Fuel Depots

Engineered Passive Fire Protection for South African Petrochem Operators

Hemera Projects delivers industrial fireproofing across South Africa’s petrochem and fuel-storage sector — Sasol Secunda and Sasolburg, Engen Durban refinery, Natref, Astron Saldanha, Total/TotalEnergies, Shell, fuel storage depots, LPG installations, and the broader downstream petroleum infrastructure. Our certified applicators install cementitious and intumescent fireproofing systems on structural steel, vessel skirts, fuel tank bunds, pipe rack columns, control room steelwork and cable infrastructure where the operator’s risk assessment or local code requires fire-rated structural protection.

In a petrochem or fuel storage environment, the credible fire scenarios are unusually severe — pool fires from spilled hydrocarbons burn at temperatures that cause structural steel to lose load-bearing capacity in minutes; jet fires from pressurised LPG or natural gas releases concentrate radiant heat onto adjacent structures; vapour cloud fires combine high-temperature exposure with explosive overpressure. Without engineered fireproofing on critical structural members, the consequences of these scenarios escalate from contained incident to catastrophic loss.

Hemera’s role is to install the engineered fire protection system to the manufacturer’s specification with documented QC: substrate preparation records, primer film thickness, fireproofing thickness measurements at every grid square, mesh installation records (where mesh-reinforced systems are specified), and final inspection records that the operator can audit and submit to insurers, certifiers, or authorities.

Where industrial fireproofing is critical in petrochem and fuel storage operations

  • LPG and pressurised gas storage: Vessel skirts, support legs, pipe rack columns near LPG storage, fuel-gas treatment areas. Jet fire ratings (typically 60 to 120 minutes hydrocarbon jet fire) are the design basis.
  • Crude and product storage tank bunds: Fuel tank skirt protection, valve manifold protection, support steelwork inside tank farm bunded areas exposed to credible pool fire scenarios.
  • Process unit structural steel: Pipe rack columns, deck steel, vessel skirts, support legs and structural members above operating units where pool fire from process leaks is credible — crude units, FCC, hydrocracker, alkylation, sulphur recovery.
  • Control room and emergency response infrastructure: Control room structural steel, escape route protection, emergency assembly point structures.
  • Cable trays and electrical infrastructure: Fire-rated coatings on critical cable runs to maintain electrical supply to safety-critical equipment (ESD valves, fire pumps, emergency power) during a fire scenario.
  • Fuel storage depot infrastructure: Tank farm structural steel, manifold support steel, valve operator protection at downstream fuel distribution depots.
  • Marine product handling: Loading arm support structures, jetty steelwork, marine fuel handling infrastructure.

Fireproofing systems we install for petrochem and fuel storage

  • Cementitious fireproofing — Sprayed cementitious systems engineered for hydrocarbon pool fire and jet fire ratings (commonly 60-, 90-, 120- or 240-minute pool fire ratings; 30 to 120-minute jet fire ratings). Applied to specified thickness over properly prepared and primed substrate.
  • Intumescent fireproofing — Thin-film intumescent coatings for cellulosic and hydrocarbon fire ratings, ideal where appearance matters (control room steel, public-facing infrastructure) or where load constraints prohibit thick cementitious build-up.
  • Mesh-reinforced fireproofing — Wire-mesh-reinforced systems for high-impact areas, vessel skirts, exterior pipe rack columns and locations where mechanical damage tolerance is required.
  • Fire-rated joint sealants and penetration sealing — Where pipework, cable or duct passes through fire-rated structures or fire walls.
  • Cryogenic spill protection — Specialist fireproofing for areas where credible cryogenic spill scenarios combine with fire risk (LNG, ethylene cold areas).

Working inside Sasol, Engen and Natref turnarounds

South African petrochem operators run their HSE programmes to top-tier international standards. Method statements, JSAs, lock-out/tag-out, permit-to-work, hot-work permits and contractor onboarding are all rigorously enforced. Hemera’s documented HSE systems are built for this environment, our supervisors are familiar with the permit-to-work systems used at Sasol, Engen, Natref, Astron and the smaller refineries, and our applicators carry the certifications operators expect.

Application QC is enforced on every shift — substrate cleanliness, primer adhesion verified, fireproofing thickness measured at every grid square, mesh installation inspected before encapsulation, and final inspection signed off before the next trade follows on. Our project records support insurance audits, third-party certification (where applicable), and any later refurbishment scoping.
